Crown Copperworks was erected at some point prior to 1797 by the Rose Copper Company of Birmingham. Sometime after 1886, copper-smelting ceased and the works were adapted for zinc smelting. In the 1920s patent fuel was manufactured on the site. The original water-supply pond survives on the western side of the Neath by-pass [SS 7295 9679] and water was conveyed over the Tennant Canal by an aqueduct.
