A concrete surround is visible in the external face of the eastern rampart bank of West Pickard Camp, an Iron Age promontory fort (NPRN 92623) and is a likely to have been a machine gun post and lookout, dug into the bank.

The Camp was used by the military during WW2, in association with the nearby Angle Airfield. Other features associated with the WW2 defences include two weapon pits (NPRNs 270745 and 270746) dug into the top of the rampart bank above the machine gun post. There is also a gun emplacement to the southwest which necessitated levelling part of the rampart bank (NPRN 801603). Other WW2 features are visible on 1946 aerial photographs (106G/UK/1629 2093-4). These include three scars possibly from the removal of temporary buildings, two inside the enclosure and one outside to the east (Murphy 2010)
