Disgrifiad
The Hill Pits mine was sunk in the late 1830s to exploit coal and ironstone deposits and opened in 1844. They were linked with Tunnel Pit after 1893. Two shafts (NPRNs 260485, 260486) were infilled in 1963. The origin of the name 'Hill Pits' probably lies in their geographical location at 1420ft (432.8m) rather than in any association with the Hill Family.
