The Wye viaduct was built by the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk and Pontypool Railway and carried a single line of railway track on a curve over the river Wye. Opened in 1861, it consisted of twenty semi-circular masonry arches, 183m in overall length, over water meadows on the western side, two lattice-girder spans, each of 23m, crossing the river and a 20m long, two-arched masonry viaduct on the eastern side. The line closed in 1964; although the track and river spans were subsequently removed, both approach viaducts remain.
