Description

House used as school circa 1820-60.

John Evans was a renowned schoolmaster in early 19th century Wales and opened his ‘Mathematical and Commercial School’ in Aberystwyth sometime during the 1820s.  The school was situated on the corner at 1 Alexandra Road (formerly Lewis Terrace), Aberystwyth.  It had a tower used for astronomy and a large sundial- essential aids for navigation.  It is reported that Sarah Jane Rees (aka Cranogwen) taught navigation at the school during the 1860s. The school has now been demolished.
