DescriptionEnclosed land to the NW of Carreg Haffes Farm (SN84421661) extends considerably further up the mountainside than elsewhere in the area and contains features which predate the modern enclosures. The OS 1/2500 Maps, editions of 1885 and 1904, show some of the field boundaries, together with the remains of one building (Ty-du). Ground examination, however, reveals the remains of many more field banks and buildings which, because of their omission from the maps, may have been disused well before 1885. These remains comprise banks, enclosures, platforms and ruined buildings.
The most prominent remains are as follows:
SN 84321679: 200m NW of the farm is a platform measuring 18m (NE-SW) by 16m, cut back to 1.5m deep and terraced to 1.5m high. Its front (SE) end is occupied by a small building.
A further 150m to the NW is the remains of Ty-Du (O.S. 25" 1st edition).
SN 84181701: to the N of Ty-Du is a rectangular stone pile, perhaps a former building, which lies alongside a bank which forms the E side of disused enclosure. A stone pile of similar size lies nearby.
SN 84111712: further to the NW, a building of three compart-ments measures 15m (N-S) by 5m, walls 0.8m wide and 0.4m high; it lies on a platform cut back to 1m deep on the N, and built out on the S to 0.6m high. A small yard lies adjacent on the W.
In the field to the N are traces of enclosures and, at SN 84161722, is a small platform. Centred on SN 84041718 is a network of vague banks. At its SW corner, at SN84031714, are the remains of a substantial subdivided building measuring 18.5m (NW-SE) by 5.5m, walls surviving to 1m high.
Other banks flank the edge of the deep cutting of the Haffes. On a terrace above the river, at SN 84101693, is a subdivided building measuring overall 10.7m (NNW-SSE) by 5.7m, coursed rubble walls surviving to 1m high; there are two attached yards. A smaller building lies to the NW at SN 84081695.
What appear to be ruined limekilns are located at SN84141691, SN84081711 and SN84111708. (NPRNs 301560-2)
