The Penrhyn Arms Hotel was built in 1799 by Benjamin Wyatt. In 1884 it became the first home of the University College of North Wales until the University moved to new buildings in 1926. The hotel was largely demolished when the A5 was re-routed, leaving behind only the arched entrance which had formed part of the front of the hotel.
