DescriptionPossible remains of an early eleventh century manorial hall have been noted at this location, but the archaeological sequence goes back to the later prehistoric or Roman periods when a farmstead was established. This was apparently followed by three phases of military occupation, but recent re-appraisal has suggested that a later date, in the second or third century is more likely, making its function as a military site problematic. A pre-Norman roundhouse of AD 950 has also been identifed.
