Description1. Two and a half storey house, in distinctive picturesque style. 2003.04.30/RCAHMW/SLE
One of a group of cottages and houses in Cottage Orne style, built for the Trevalyn Estate while it was under the stewardship of John Boydell. The range at the front appears to have been added to an extant building of 19th century character. It is not shown on early 19th century maps of the village suggesting that it was not then part of the Trevalyn Estate and may have been built or modified in the mid 19th century. It is known houses were being built in this style as late as 1838. Altered in the 20th century.
A 2-storey rendered cottage of irregular plan and with a basement where the land falls away to the rear. It has a slate roof with rendered chimneys. There is a symmetrical elevation to Springfield Lane with a central, projecting, gabled bay flanked by lean-to wings with upswept roofs. The central door has an ogee fanlight head containing Gothick glazing detail, flanked by arched, cast-iron windows with Gothick glazing. The upper floor has a cast-iron multipaned window with Gothick glazing detail and ogee head, and above this is a small, blind, arched opening. The single storey wings each have a mock arrow slit and windows with ogee heads as before. There is a dentil eaves cornice which returns for a short distance at eaves level in the gable. The left hand return elevation and the rear have 19th and 20th century fenestration.
The main room retains the front door with strap hinges and exposed ceiling beams, otherwise remodelled.
