DescriptionBritannia colliery was built by the Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd. in 1910-14. The confined site available for the construction of this pit resulted in Britannia being the first colliery sunk and worked by electricity. Coal was moved by conveyor belt because horses had been unavailable from the beginning of the First World War. The colliery closed in 1989. Headframes and major surface buildings remain intact.
