DescriptionEarthwork features on low lying ground by the Afon Gwili can be discerned on RAF vertical coverage (106G/UK 1625/2108).
At the given grid reference is near square embanked enclosure, about 42.5-45m across, which appears to have rounded eastern corners. On the west side it is attached to a linear feature, probably a track, that runs from the area of the Cwmgwili kitchen garden to the north, to the edge of the Gwili to the south. Below the kitchen garden the track is lost in an area of poorly defined features that could be garden earthworks, part of the grounds and gardens of Cwmgwili (NPRN 266182), a sixteenth century and later mansion (NPRN 17269).
It is possible that the embanked enclosure is itself a garden feature or possibly a medieval moated enclosure. It is also possible that this is a Roman military work, although its relationship to the track may count against this.
A similar earthwork enclosure is recorded in the valley bottom to the south, at Glan-Gwili (NPRN 407073).
