Description

Litchard County Primary School was first built by General Constructions (Cardiff) in 1952-53 to meet the demands of new housing in the area. The school was designed by Gordon H. Griffiths (Cardiff) in collaboration with L. R. Gower (County Architect) and cost around £62,000. The combined Junior and Infants' School could accommodate 320 pupils (200 juniors and 120 infants). The premises contained six classrooms, two general purpose rooms, assembly hall, kitchen and dining hall (separated from the assembly hall by a sliding folding partition), administrative block and cloaks and sanitary offices. The school was traditionally constructed with 11-inch cavity walls and solid concrete floors finished with wood blocks. The assembly and dining halls were heated by means of under-floor panels incorporated in the sub-floor concrete. Hardboard ceilings suspended from the steel trusses of the roof. A new Litchard Infants' School was built in 1968-69 at a cost of £68,000. This school was specfically an Open Plan designed school with the Junior and Infants schools in separate buildings, and in September 2009 were amalgamated to form Litchard Primary School, providing education for children aged 3-11 years old. In 2011-12 the school underwent a £2m refurbishment and extension as a new administration block with purpose-built nursery was built. The school is situated on the northern outskirts of Bridgend and serves the areas of Litchard, Pendre and Wildmill. In 2011, 30% of pupils came from outside the school's catchment area.
