Description
This collection comprises material created and collated by the former Royal Commission investigator C.N. Johns. The material, which consists of notes, mss texts, articles, maps, plans, drawings, photographs, and correspondence, relates to various topics and sites. Majoratively represented is material relating to RCAHMW Inventories, especially Glamorgan; and Johns' interest in, and contributions to, several guide-books, most notably castles. The collection also includes photographs relating to Johns' work in Syria, 1929-1948; published (Ashgate 1997) as 'Pilgrims' Castle ('Atlit), David's Tower (Jerusalem) and Qal'at ar-Rabad ('Ajlun)'. C.N. Johns was employed from 1930-1948 as Field Archaeologist, and later as deputy director of the Department of Antiquities of the Palestine Mandate; on its termination, he became principal investigator in the Royal Commission of Ancient Monuments in Wales until 1969.
