Description
Possibly referred to in the tenth century, the building of the church relates to the Anglo-Norman settlement of Gwent in the late-eleventh century. The village reached its maximum extent in the Medieval period when around 25 buildings lay along a series of tracks, close to a village green, church and possible manor house. Thereafter the number of occupied houses dwindled until, by the late eighteenth century, the landlord allowed the remaining buildings to fall into disrepair, apparently to dislodge lawless tenants.
