DescriptionThe main house at the gentry farmstead of Heol-ddu (see NPRN 31610).
This is a fine mid eighteenth century house with a datestone of 1742. It is a two storey building with attics, with a lower rear range, single storey with attics, and a similar extension added on the south-west. The walls are stone rubble, whitened at the front and rendered elsewhere.
The house faces north-east across a narrow walled forecourt towards the farmyard. It presents a near symmetrical three bay facade with a central doorway and sash windows. These openings have cambered arched heads. There is a slate gabled roof framed by end chimney stacks. At the rear there are two small blocked staircase windows. The rear range is also gabled and has a massive projecting end stack. Its ground floor window is similar to those in the main house. The south-east extention is again gabled with an end stack. Its windows have flat heads.
The interior has timber framed lathe and plaster partions. The main door opens onto a passage with the stair at the rear. The kitchen was on the right hand side and the parlour to the left.
Behind to the south-west is a second, smaller house with similar details, dated 1773 (NPRN 306650), when the estate was occupied by two brothers. There are several eighteenth century farmbuildings, including a stable range that could also have served as a coachhouse (NPRN 306670).
