Description
Four undistinguished late nineteenth century cottages have been contrived out of the fabric of the late fifteenth-early sixteenth century gatehouse to St John's Priory (NPRN 100039). The gatehouse is not divided up on the 1st edition OS 1:500 Town Plan of 1888. According to an early nineteenth century account the gatehouse was 'inhabited by poor people, who have converted the remainder into cart-house, pig-sties and other such receptacles' (Donovan 'Descriptive Excursions through South Wales & Monmouthshire' 1804).
The three other houses of the terrace, Nos. 8-10 to the south-west, are additions to the original building, but are shown on a map of 1786.
