Site Description Possible remains of an early eleventh century manorial hall have been noted at this location, but the archaeological sequence goes back to the later prehistoric or Roman periods when a farmstead was established. This was apparently followed by three phases of military occupation, but recent re-appraisal has suggested that a later date, in the second or third century is more likely, making its function as a military site problematic. A pre-Norman roundhouse of AD 950 has also been identifed.
