Description
Melin Bodowyr is a two-storey rubblestone building, with a newer extension at the north-west end and lean-to buildings on three elevations. The main building measures 10.8 x 4.9 metres internally. The composite, six-spoked water wheel, 3.94 metres diameter by 1.64 metres wide on a wooden ocatgonal axle, is on the south-east gable, and drives two pairs of stones (one french, one Anglesey). The internal gears are cast iron on a wooden main shaft. The sack hoist and its drive are complete.
On the first floor a spare french runner stone is leaning agaist the wall, and in an adjacent stable is a spare pit wheel, unused.
In November 2008 the mill and its machinery are still essentially complete, though parts of the upper floor are deteriorating. The stones were still complete with tuns, hoppers, shoes and crook strings; the horizontal shaft which drove the dressing machines and churn had been removed, and the pit wheel had fallen back towards the wall. Outside, the waterwheel is decayed, its shrouds cracked and plated and many of its soleboards and buckets rotted away.
The smaller building to the south, adjacent to the road, was used as a kiln, but was formerly the mill, as evidenced by the cast iron pit gear which is still close to its working position.
