Description
Grounds and gardens associated with the early nineteenth century villa Furnace Lodge (NPRN 17572), home to the owners or managers of the tinplate works over the road (NPRN 40504). House and grounds are depicted in some detail on the 1st edition OS County series (Carmarthen. XXXI.3 1890).
The house is set on a terrace above the main road east of Carmarthen and faces south-east across it towards the tinplate works. The grounds consist of a 2.0 acre (5.0ha) strip parallel to the road. Drives enter through ornate wrought iron gates to the south-west (NPRN 17574) and north-east (NPRN 17573). There were a stable and coachhouse behind the house. The sloping ground between the road and drives was planted with trees and shrubs. The remainder of the grounds appear to be laid out as shrubberies or lawns with occassional trees.
The grounds are now much built over.
