Event and Historical Information:
Sources differ as to whether the TOWN OF WEXFORD was a sailing vessel or steamship. The vessel belonged to the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company who held the contract for the mail service between Holyhead and Dublin. The Holyhead lifeboat was towed out the vessel by the ANGLIA- one of the paddle steamers belonging its rival operator, the London and North Western Railway Company. The TOWN OF WEXFORD was under the command of master Murphy, when it ran ashore at Trefadog, Holyhead Bay on 4 January 1852. During the course of several trips, the lifeboat was able to save 43 lives.
