Description
The lower section of the Darren Cilau Inclined Plane . The embankment of the incline is approximately 8m wide and the track-bed about 1.2m. There are remnants of stone sleeper blocks showing wear from chains or hawsers and also the hoes for fixing the rail chairs . Small fragments of " L " shaped tram plate-way can be found along the length of the incline. Towards the top of the incline, on the eastern side there is a retaining wall, 1.2m high.
The lower part of this incline date to around 1815 whilst the upper section from around 1830. For a full description see Early Limestone Railways, J. van Laun, 2001, pp 94 - 99.
