Description
NAR SN64SE8

An erect monolith showing four depressions, traditional the pillow for the five saints of Pumsaint (see Nprn32244): identified as a mortar stone from a crushing mill, possibly Roman, although a medieval, or post-medieval dating would be more conventional, one of a variety of lithic processing artefacts recovered from the general area below the Ogofau mine-workings: the mound upon which the stone is set was sectioned in 1974 (illustration in OS card record), apparently indicating that it is a natural feature, although adjacent excavations have shown that this area is greatly effected by mining activity (see Nprn402248).
