2. CAIRN BASE. 8.8M DIA. 0.6M HIGH. MODERN BEEHIVE CAIRN 5.8M DIAM 3.7M HIGH OBSCURES PART. KERB NOTED BY RCAHM archive, 1972 BUT DISCOUNTED BY OS, 1978. (RC 55-6) There are cairns on either end of DRYGARN FAWR on land belonging to the National Trust. Both are surmounted by modern cairns which take the form of beehive towers.1 It is unclear exactly when these were built, but they may have been erected as markers during the present century. (RC 55) The more westerly, on the summit of the ridge and 645 m above O.D., is stone-built and 9.8 m (N.-S.) by 8.8 m (E.-W.) in diameter. The remains of a kerb of blocks set end to end may be traced around its perimeter. Some blocks are up to 1.3 m long. Although the interior only attains a height of 0.6 m, the modern dry-stone cairn, which is of solid masonry, stands 5.8 m in diameter and 3.7 m high, surmounted by a small cap of white quartz stones and a concrete boundary pillar.2 1.
