DescriptionNAR SS19NW1
Excavations in 1877-8 and 1958, produced Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age & early medieval material, including mammoth and rhinoceros remains (Mc Burney 1959, 268-9; Alcock 1960); for more recent investigations see Aldhouse Green 1996).
A 5th-8th century AD settlement, which also produced a limited amount of Romano-British material, has been excavated on the summit of Longbury Bank, above the cave (Campbell & Lane 1993): it is to be assumed that the mammoth remains at least pre-date the early medieval material.
See Nprn304237 for Hoyles Mouth Cave nearby.
