3. The church is home to the Roman epitaph to Julius Julianus, unearthed around 1692 at the church. The inscription translates as: 'To the spirits of the departed; Julius Julianus, soldier of the Second Legion Augusta, of 18 years’ service, aged 40, lies buried here; Amanda, his wife, had charge of the work.' RIB 360. Funerary inscription for Julius Julianus | Roman Inscriptions of Britain . In 2025, a Roman-style cropmark enclosure (NPRN 307466) was discovered during Royal Commission aerial reconnaissance only 50m to the north of the church, which may well be the Roman settlement associated with the burial. The inscription is on display inside the church.
