Description
Evidence of Roman occupation was discovered by H J Thomas in 1956. In 1958 a small amount of excavation was carried out. Four sites were explored on the edges of an area measuring 165 m from north to south by 119 m wide:

(i) ST 0735 6955 A stone building associated with late 3rd ? 4th century pottery, some rooms appear to have been painted with opus signinum.
(ii) ST 0740 6970 Two periods of construction were identified. Finds included pottery, coins and a 4th century bronze spoon.
(iii) ST 0745 6964 Evidence of a hearth as well as coarse pottery and a coin were among the finds.
(iv) ST0747 6954 An occupation area which yielded 2nd ? 4th century pottery and a 4th century coin.
