Site Description Aberdaron village is situated at the mouth of the river Daron, at the extremity of the Llyn peninsula and opposite Bardsey Island. On this island was the early medieval monastery of St Mary's Abbey (NPRN 93544), which, until the dissolution, was an important pilgrimage centre for Wales. Aberdaron was the usual place of embarkation for the island.
The parish church of St Hywyn's (NPRN 43749), situated in the village, has origins in the 12th century and was closely connected with the monastery.
The poet R.S. Thomas became vicar of Aberdaron 1967 and lived in the vicarage until 1978.
