The Lefel Fawr colliery was established around 1800, following the opening of the Swansea Canal, by the Abercrave Colliery Co of Daniel Harper. A horse-drawn tramway was built, Llwyn Llafrod Tramroad, to take the coal to the canal and to the Abercrave Ironworks.
