Description
South Wales Steel and Tinplate Works, Llanelli, started as a tinplate works in 1872. In 1879-80 two open-hearth furnaces were erected, making this the first integrated steel and tinplate works in Llanelli. In 1899 the site was purchased by Richard Thomas & Co. In 1911 they extended the mill with the addition of eight new mills to the existing ten. The works were served by Richard Thomas' wharf (NPRN 34222) to the north on the New Dafen River and the site closed in 1958.
