Description
Dr. Richard Bevan was given permission to construct a tramroad from the Neath Canal at Abernant to Dinas Limestone Quarry in July 1799. Construction commenced in 1802 but was suspended when a Hirwaun to Abernant tramroad was promoted; the section between Pont Walby and Abernant was later built as part of that tramroad, opened in 1805. Bevan restarted work on his Pont Walby to Dinas line in 1806 and completed it the following year. His descendents still owned it in 1859. In 1860 the tramroad was converted from its original form of a 4ft. 2ins. gauge plateway to that of an edge-railway of mixed gauge: 2ft. 6ins. and 3ft. 6ins., although provision was made for conveying plateway trams. The tramroad appears to have ceased working about 1925.
