Description

Site of the excavation of a Roman courtyard building or large store building in Priory Field, Caerleon, by Dr Peter Guest and Dr Andrew Gardner between 2007-2010. The excavations were run by Cardiff University ad UCL Institute of Archaeology on behalf of Cadw. Geophysical surveys in 2006 and 2007 had identitied at least 13 previously unknown buildings in Priory Field including barracks, granaries and one range of a large courtyard building.

Excavations were carried out in 2008 (four weeks) and 2010 (six weeks). The excavations were overflown during RCAHMW aerial reconnaissance on 21st July 2008.

The work produced a huge finds assemblage including over 1,800 registered artefacts, 2,800 nails, 5,000 sherds of pottery, 110kg of animal bone and almost 6 tonnes of broken roof tile and brick. The excavations were published in 2025 by Guest and Gardner.

Dr Toby Driver, RCAHMW, 4th August 2008. Updated August 2025.
