The dam is constructed of earth with a masonry inner face and it produces hydroelectricity. The reservoir was constructed to supply water to the Spencer Steelworks at Llanwern. It is presently managed by Dwr Cymru, Welsh Water, and is run as a country park. The site was photographed during RCAHMW aerial reconnaissance on 9 June 2006.
