Description
The Toll House in Machen dates from the early nineteenth century and lies within the garden of Toll House Cottage. The house is a remnant of the Caerphilly Turnpike and it is now alonside the A468. It is considered as a rare surviving earlier nineteenth century toll-house.
The Toll House is built from whitewashed rubble stone and has a hipped roof with twentieth century concrete tiles but no chimney. The front has a recessed board door with a segmental-pointed head. There are two pointed windows to the centre left and centre right and each casement pair has fixed tracery in the head. Later twentieth century additions include the shutters and an addition to the right end of the building.
