Description
Located above a stream cutting, on its east side, is a rectangular building measuring 8.7m (N-S) by 3.5m within partly tumbled drystone walls 0.8m thick and still standing to 1.8m high with an entrance gap in the east wall. At a point 3m from the south end of the building the floor level drops by about 0.3m, the entrance being at the lower level. The entrance opens out onto an enclosed area about 5m wide and extending beyond the length of the building.
The structure now lies in dense forestry and unfortunately the remains are largely obscured by fallen trees and deep moss hindering a more detailed assessment. However, the building is shown on first edition OS mapping as a sheepfold but is portrayed as a two-cell structure, reflected in the observed upper and lower floor levels. It is therefore possible that this building, if it ever was a sheepfold, had initially been a `longhut? constructed for some other purpose, for example as a seasonal `lluest?. Inside the structure lengths of joinery and sheets of corrugated iron suggest more recent attempts at using the site for shelter.
The building lies at 270m ASL, close to the head of a tributary stream of Afon Einion and joins the river close to Cwm-Einion house and may thus have been linked to that farm.
