Description
A war memorial to the dead of the First World War and the Second World War, situated to the centre of a small railed enclosure (a paved area with plant beds) between the river and St Michael's Church, at the junction of Water Street and St Teilo's Street.
The memorial consists of square section, pink marble with white marble panels with plinth, steps and statue to apex. Base has four steps in rock-faced pink marble with a similar plinth; shouldered step to base in smooth marble. The main section has smooth pink marble corner pilasters with wider bases and caps with raised squared vertical banding. White marble panels to sides. The south and east sides give the names of those fallen in war in aluminium lettering. The two-tier shorter upper section has similar corner pilasters in pink marble and white marble panels. Inscriptions to the south and east sides read: ''The Only Hope of Peace 1914 - 1918'' to south; ''Unig Gobaith Hedd 1939 - 1945'' to east. ''At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them'' in Welsh to south and English to east. The top section is supported on a corbelled cornice, similar style but slightly smaller. At the apex a statue of a female figure bearing an upright cross and olive branch. (Cadw Listing database)
