Description

Landscaping around the former nuclear power station at Trawsfynydd (nprn 301092) was done by Dame Sylvia Crowe in the early 1960s. Her work ensured that the power station was sympathetically introduced into the rugged Snowdonia landscape without detriment to its essential character (301093). Part of her wider landscaping included two discrete gardens: Dragon Square and the Dame Sylvia Crowe Garden (422272), both located on the south-east, lakeside part of the building complex.
Dragon Square, to the east of the administration block, is a small square formal garden within an evergreen hedge. Its main feature is a slightly raised elaborate swirling Welsh dragon delineated by dark grey stones and cream-coloured cobbles. Surrounding gravel has been planted with shrubs, harbaceous plants and grasses. The recent erection of a low fence around the gravelled interior has cut across some parts of the dragon.
