Description
The village of Cwmtwrch is divided into Cwmtwrch Uchaf and Cwmtwrch Isaf. It is a long and narrow village, running for about a mile a half in parallel with the river Twrch. The centre of the village is situated about two miles west of the centre of Ystradgynlais.
The village has several amenities, including a Welsh-medium primary school called "Ysgol Gymraeg Dyffryn y Glowyr;" a rugby club; football club; miners institute (NPRN 414910); plant nursery and Post Office. There are five public houses - The George; The Old Tredegar; The New Tredegar; Y Ffynnon and Y Twrch. At one time the community was served by five chapels: Ebenezer Welsh Independent Chapel (NPRN 6179); Newydd Baptist chapel (NPRN 12277); Beulah Baptist chapel (NPRN 10088); Bethel Independent chapel (NPRN 10064) and Bethania Methodists Chapel (NPRN 12278).
