Description
Y Rhiw is a small, scattered village situated approximately eleven miles south west of Pwllheli, on the Llyn Peninsula. In the nineteenth century, the main source of employment other than agriculture was probably the iron and manganese mine on the north western edge of the village, which was in operation for approximately fifty years between the 1830s and 1880s. On the first, second and third editions of the 25inch OS maps, published in 1889, 1901 and 1919 respectively, there is a school and 'siop-newydd' ('new shop') in the village, although both have now gone. There is a small manor house on the north eastern edge of Y Rhiw called Plas-yn-Rhiw (NPRN 16767), now owned by the National Trust. The religious needs of the residents of Y Rhiw were at one time served by three chapels and a church. The church is dedicated to St. Aelrhiw (NPRN 301082), and situated well to the north of the village. Nebo Independent chapel is situated nearer the centre of the village (NPRN 7095). The other two chapels - a Calvinistic Methodist chapel (NPRN 7096) and a Wesleyan Methodist chapel (NPRN 7097) have both closed.
