Description
Talybont is a small village located two miles south east of Bangor city centre. It is divided from its slightly larger neighbour, Llandygai, by the river Ogwen and the railway line to Holyhead. The village has a surprising number of religious buildings considering its size. Bethlehem Welsh Independent chapel (NPRN 6736) was built in the village centre on land donated by the nearby Penrhyn Estate (NPRN 16687). The Gatehouse Calvinistic Methodist chapel was located half a mile north east of the village centre, although it had fallen into disuse by 1996 (NPRN 6925). There was also a mission room less than half a mile to the south east (NPRN 11961) and a Church dedicated to St. Cross a third of a mile north east of Tal-y-Bont. On the 1st edition of the 25inch OS map, published in 1889, there is a public house called George and Dragon just south of the railway line at Tal-y-Bont. By the time the 2nd edition was published in 1900, the public house had disappeared. However, not too far from the original public house there is now a hotel called The Slate/Y Llechan, which was formerly known as the Abbeyfield.
