Description
Llanwnda and the adjoining village to the north, Dinas, are situated approximately three miles south of Caernarfon. On the first edition of the OS 25 inch maps, published in 1889, there was another small village called Glan-rhyd in between Dinas and Llanwnda, but this seems to have been swallowed up as the two larger villages developed towards each other in a linear fashion. Amenities in the village today include an outdoor/camping shop and a car sales. The primary school is located approximately a mile south east of the village centre and educates approximately 25 pupils through the medium of Welsh. There is also a children's nursery on the southern edge of Llanwnda. Dinas (NPRN 91421) has a stop on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway line. The community's religious needs were served by a church dedicated to St. Gwyndaf (NPRN 405153) as well as Pont Glanrhyd Calvinistic Methodist chapel (NPRN 7047) and Graianfryn Calvinistic Methodist chapel (NPRN 97159). Glanrhyd chapel and St. Gwyndaf's church are still open today.
The first edition of the 25inch OS maps (published in 1889) also indicate that there was a station (NPRN 41415) at Llanwnda on the Caernarvonshire branch of the London and Northwestern Railway. Next to the station was the Railway Inn, with the Goat Hotel located about 100 yards south. The Railway Inn was not marked on the third edition of the OS maps, published in 1918, but the Goat Hotel was. Further north, nearer the Dinas stop on the railway, was the Mount Pleasant Hotel. None of these hotels are open now.
