Description
Maen-y-Groes is a small village situated approximately a mile south of New Quay. It has developed outwards from a crossroads where the A486 meets a minor road which runs from New Quay in the north to the small village of Llwyndafydd in the south west. The first edition of the 6inch OS maps, published in 1891, depicts the village has having a small nucleus, with a smithy, surrounded by farms such as Llain-y-Grog, Ty'r Ffynnon and Ty-Rhos, which still exist today. Maen-y-Groes also had two chapels - a Wesleyan Methodist chapel called Sion or Soar (NPRN 7195) and Maen-y-Groes Independent chapel (NPRN 7347). Little had changed by the time the fourth edition of the 6inch maps had been published between 1938 and 1953. In the twenty-first century, the village has developed mostly southwards along the A486, culminating in a caravan site called 'Ocean Heights Leisure.'
