Description
The village of Pren Gwyn is situated on the A475, approximately fifteen miles east of Cardigan and ten miles south west of Lampeter. On the first edition of the 25inch OS maps, published in 1889, the village had a public house called the Gwarcefel Arms, a smithy, a Unitarian chapel and an Independent chapel. All except the smithy are still open today, and Pren Gwyn also has a roofing suppliers specialising in Welsh slate.
Carmel Independent chapel (NPRN 7282) and its adjoining school room were first built in 1819, a little to the north east of the village centre. The Unitarian chapel and school room were closer to the village centre, and known as Capel Pant-y-Defaid (NPRN 7290). It was first built in 1802, and was one of thirteen Unitarian chapels in the area that were 'resistant to successive waves of evangelical revival emanating from the epicentre of Welsh Calvinistic Methodism, Llangeitho, not far to the north. As such these communities became collectively known to a hostile Methodist historiography as the `Black Spot? (Y Smotyn Du).'
