DescriptionThe village of Saron is situated two miles west of Ammanford. The first edition of the 25inch maps, published in 1878, depicts a small village centred around the Colliers Arms public house and the Welsh Baptist chapel (NPRN 97167), which was built in 1814, rebuilt in 1824, enlarged in 1863. A school had been built to the south west of the village centre by the time the 2nd edition of the 25inch OS maps was published in 1906. A new Baptist chapel (NPRN 6379) had been built next to the original one, which was converted into a Sunday school and vestry. The village had continued to develop in the ten years between the publication of the second edition and the third edition of the 25inch OS maps, which was published in 1916. There were more houses immediately to the east of the village centre, as well as a church dedicated to St. David (NPRN 418210).
In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, more houses were built in Saron, forming a continuous line between the village centre and the school. Ysgol Gynradd Saron educates children aged three to eleven through the medium of Welsh in nine classes. Saron's chapel and church appear to have remained open as places of worship and the village also has a shop, although there is no longer any sign of the Colliers Arms.
