Description
The 1st and 2nd editions of the historic 25-inch O. S. maps, published in 1877 and 1899 respectively, depict Old Town Mill as a working flour mill on the banks of the Afon Dawen to the south-west of Cowbridge. The lie of the land here, where Town Mill Road makes a sharp bend to cross the river, suggests that the leat which powered the mill could have had only a very small gradient, powering an undershot wheel. A modern dwelling occupies the mill site, having a similar though smaller footprint than the mill itself. Two adjacent 19th century cottages were associated with the mill, and bear the names 'Littlemill' and 'Mill Cottage'.
