Description

St Helen's church is located on the north side of the road through the village. Originally conceived as a mission church, it was built in 1883 to designs by Henry Kennedy for George W Duff Assheton-Smith who was 'concerned that the villagers might lapse into indifference or Dissent'. The church ('uninspired') is built of rubble with red sandstone dressings. It comprises nave, chancel, and south porch, with a west bellcote on a pair of buttresses. Its interior walls are, unusually, of brick: red to dado level, yellow above.
