Type Of SiteSUBMERGED FOREST
PeriodMesolithic
DescriptionA thin layer of peat, which is in turn buried by a substantial thickness of laminated sandy silts. The eastern peat exposures relate to the disrupted bedding within the overlying estuarine silts, where a palaeochannel or embayment cuts the underlying peat. Five tree stumps and six trunks have been mapped. Flint artefacts and charcoal have been found. The carbon 14 dates for the peat suggest 6790 +/- 38BP. The dendro dates for the tree stumps suggest 6195-5938 +/-16.
