Description
This record comprises a documentary reference to a shipping casualty which has been assigned to the maritime named location HOLYHEAD BAY pending more information which may allow a more precise location for the loss to be assigned.

Event and Historical Information:
The FONMON CASTLE was a wooden smack built at Neath in 1803. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 44 3342/3500 tons burthen; length 46ft, breadth in midships 14.4ft, depth in hold 8.8ft; 1 deck, 1 mast, smack, rigged with a running bowsprit, square sterned, carvel built. At time of loss, the vessel was owned by William Jenkins of Fishguard, mariner (64). The smack's Port of Cardigan Shipping Register entry (9 in 1847) is closed with the annotation 'Vessel lost together with Register on the 1 May 1856 in Holyhead Bay as appears by the letter of David Thomas, the master'.
