Caer Rhûn Hall (nprn 26172) is situated in the upper Conwy valley, above the west bank of the river. It is notable for the historical interest of its well-preserved terraced garden layout of the 1890s (86325), in an attractive riverside location, set in once very extensive older parkland, which runs down to the river on the east and also extends some way to the north and south, on both sides of the B5106. The park includes the small medieval church of St Mary (43767) and the Roman fort and settlement of Canovium (95640) within which the church and churchyard lie. The estate has historical association with the military figure, Major-General G.H.Gough of India.
The park is bounded on the east by the river, on the west by the B5106 Conwy to Betws y Coed road (beyond which the park slightly extends), on the south by the river and a tributary, and on the north by belts of woodland. The park dates from at least the early nineteenth century. Although it pre-dates the present house its layout was largely unchanged when the house was rebuilt and the garden redesigned in 1892. Aside from a paddock south of the garden, the park is now detached from the house, in multiple ownership, and is farmed. Many of the trees shown on early maps have gone but it retains its parkland appearance, sloping gently towards the river and dotted with old oaks. Some areas of deciduous woodland remain with the addition of some mixed plantations. On the river bank, north-east of the Roman Fort, is a dock of unknown date which may have been re-used in the nineteenth century (303122).
An ice-house is located in the northern part of the park, on the edge of a plantation north-east of the house, under a man-made mound. The house is situated on the west side of the park, alongside the B5106, and was approached from the north via a short drive from an entrance and lodge off the road.
Gardens lie around the house (86325) and also on the other side of the road by Caerhun Farm (700103).
