Description

Tregaron Intermediate (County) School was opened on 17 May 1897, initially in the old Town Hall which was erected c.1872, but following the construction of a new purpose-built building, was formally opened in May 1899, by which point there were between 70-80 pupils in attendance. The 1897-1898 building could accommodate up to 100 pupils, and was designed by Llewelyn Bankes Price of Lampeter and construction undertaken by John Evans, Llanybydder, at a cost of around £2,200. Due to increasing numbers at the school, in 1946 the vestry at Bwlchygwynt chapel was used prior to the purchase of land on the field opposite in which to build new buildings.

In 1950 new school buildings for Tregaron County Secondary School were officially opened across the road. The 1899 building later went on to serve as a library and sixth form school before the revamp of the secondary school and establishment of Ysgol Henry Richard in 2019 on the opposite side of the road as part of Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools Programme. The old County School building was decommissioned in 2014 and sold for around £160,000 in July 2021.
