Description
Fochriw Colliery comprises a pair of pits sunk by the Dowlais Iron Co. Sinking commenced in February 1857, and coal was reached in November 1862. No.1 Pit (north) commenced raising coal in June 1863. No.2 Pit (south) commenced raising coal in September 1866. The colliery was closed in 1924 and the site was later cleared and the ground re-graded.
